Reading Ramanujan

Reading Ramanujan....

A name most known amongst Indian Mathematicians. Long after school, one day as i was getting my drop to my workplace in a Times of India article by R. Madhavan; I learnt about a book on this Indian Mathematical Genius. 'The Man Who Knew Infinity - by Robert Kanigel'.

On learning about this book, I tried ordering this book from an online vendor and it got cancelled, due to non availability. All of a sudden i get the book from the same vendor a few days later. The book with a photograph of Ramanujan, on the stamp issued by India after his death.

Ramanujan's Early Days:

Ramanujan starts his life in a struggling India, under British Raj. A young Ramanujan then fascinated by Mathematics starts disliking other subjects and continues concentrating only on Mathematics. The hardships of a young Ramanujan with a slate and his dark elbow; due to constant erasing of wrong trials; shows the state of our nation at the time.

Ramanujan used to write only the right results in the papers; as funding for papers were tough. This shows the dedication of a man willed to do his work amongst all odds.

The early days as a Brahmin boy increases his spiritual stretch of mind. His belief in the Goddess of Namakal and the upbringing is a story to read. The commuting difficulties of the time, were most astonishing, when we read a hundred years later.

The Book of Carr

Till now, Ramanujan interested in Mathematics finds a book of Carr and starts working on the problems in the book and also derives his own corollaries from them. The book was not duly explained. In spite of which Ramanujan goes ahead to understand the findings. This happens with the minimal of guidance and support. This only states the fact that, he was born only to derive Mathematics for the World of Tomorrow.

Leisure:

The word that has evolved over the years. To today's generation Leisure mostly means to stay free, doing nothing; at least from what i had thought of till date; without looking up to the dictionary. This same word meant "A Freedom to do something specified or implied". This was the leisure that Ramanujan wanted to continue his Mathematical Research.

This word comes, when Ramanujan tries hard to do more maths and struggle with a Port Clerk job. The British Raj was not all cruel. It allows a student without a degree to pursue his love for Mathematics and also pays him as a Research Student.

Search For Patrons:

Sir's search for patrons starts. Its this recognition for his work, was what Sir Ramanujan lived all his life. He walks from Door to Door,Office to Office and writes letters to. After a long list of Mathematicians, Sir sends letters to Hardy.

On the Greatest Love Stories

Hardy after receiving the letters of result, requests Ramanujan to come to England and work with him. The Hindu belief of crossing the sea being a sin stops, until Neville comes to convince and Ramanujan makes his journey to England with a ticket of Rs 400/- from being a clerk awarded Rs 25/- per month. With funding from Government and also from England.

Hardy and Ramanujan's association was a great one because, their work speaks for volumes. In the period from 1914 to 1918 Ramanujan and Hardy got out a series of papers. The papers were later collected to for a book 'The Collected Papers of S Ramanujan' published by Hardy ranged 330 pages. This book costs close Rs 4000/- Indian Money.

Why, i call this a love story? Just hold on till the end of this little story of my experience of reading Sir Ramanujan.

In Indifferent Health

The toughness of English weather and the stringent vegetarianism of Ramanujan deteriorates his health. His health struck by Tuberculosis starts going from bad to worse by the day and the War. Ramanujan is treated by keeping the windows open to chill, to reduce the increase of Tuberculosis.

This leads Hardy to put forth Ramanujan s case for an F.R.S ( Fellow Of Royal Society). Hardy plainly explains, telling that we have to give it to him for his work some day; if not in this attempt; what is the point to give after he is no longer there?.

The mathematical genius Ramanujan was is a fascinating story; well known to all of us. The story of Ramanujan telling Hardy that 1729, his taxi number as "a smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways". That is sum 12 cube and 1 cube. And sum of 10 cube and 9 cube.

The Lost Notebook

At the death bed Ramanujan discovers 620 plus formulae on Mock Theta Functions. This is after his return to India, which is safe guarded by his wife Janaki.

Long after his death, people have still been working on Ramanujan's discoveries. There are more than 300 papers addressed to Ramanujan in the title or abstract in the years after his death.

George Andrews who visits Watson's home in 1988, almost 100 years after Ramanujan's birth. This book had been passed from Watson to Hardy in 1923, then Whittaker had pulled it out of Watson's papers. Whittaker and Rankin together had put these papers in Trinity College Library. This book from Trinity Library derived by Andrews goes on to become the 'The Lost Notebook'

The airmail postage of this material was to cost 7 pounds at the time, for which Andrews goes on record to say," I was ready to take a second mortgage on my house to get it". Just emphasises the greatness of the work, on the mock theta functions.

After Death

He still lives on with his garden of discoveries being visited by many budding mathematicians and research students from varied fields.

Hardy after Ramanujan, never wanted to forget Ramanujan in the years to come In the year 1936, Hardy writes to S Chandrasekhar that he was going to deliver 12 lectures on Subjects Suggested by His Life and Work. This work was later reviewed as a Labor of Love.

Hardy proclaims Ramanujan's work as " One gift ( Ramanujan's work) has which no one can deny is the profound and invincible originality".

Ramanujan Sir continues to live and the recognition that he always desired; lives on even 60 years after his death and will for go on till the earth and mathematics lives.....

I call this experience of reading the book as 'Reading Ramanjan' because it is just the start of knowing a great Indian. I am waiting for the day when i can buy the books " Collected Papers - S Ramanujan" and " The Lost Notebook - S Ramanujan".

Only way... was Way Up !!!!

Skandagiri...... The memory still lives fresh!!!!!!
The day started.... oops.... or rather the night started with a dinner at Nagarjuna, then we reach 'My Name Is Khan' the movie was an emotional torture again by Karan Johar. All of us who reached the first day release, realized... never trust the rating in the media, for a Karan Johar movie at least. Seriously the movie was dragged in all ways possible.
Next started our expedition to Skandagiri. Why i call it an expedition, you will know it very soon ....:)
People who have trekked skandagiri, would feel; 'Why an expedition?' True....even we had a few from the group, who had trekked the place and felt the same. There started the problem, we din't hire a guide, as few of our friends were ultra confident of being able to reach the place easily and few had their own doubts. We guess even you would agree with the fact, if you have trekked the place.

The trek started with another group who started the trek at the same time. It is a night trek and people felt the person ahead must be right. As usual, we followed. Then the risk factor started taking the quotient higher. There was one small rock, we climbed and then came another and another. The torches were of real help though. We reach a point where in the rock in front slides upwards 60 degrees approximately and the supporting rock had not much to hold on it too. Then the expedition began, one after the other started the attempt to climb, Akshay was successful, Pramod started to slide at a certain point, due to the sand. Nervousness started creeping in. Now, you should have seen our faces, we were just hoping that no one slid. Then was the turn of our own Rajeev, he tried and then came back..'Nahi yaar, we need to climb bare foot' and removed his shoes, this was a picturesque scene; Rajeev with shoes in one hand and torch in the other. This was becoming dangerous by every step ahead. Imagine guys, you don’t know where you would fall, if one footing went wrong.

Then came the best of them all.....Rajendra started to climb and some where in the middle, there was a space where a man could hide himself; amongst the rocks. Just like one of our Hindi bollywood movie, military scenes. We were noticing Rajendra and immediately, he slid a little and went into the hiding, he was not speaking a word though. I was reminded of 'Border' as there were an enemy army and our commander in chief was trying to find a place and attack. Then where are we going to hide. No ways..... I remember all of us watching him with open eyes, so big that the eyes could have fallen off, if they had a little more shock to take. Then, Vignesh our tall little boy, had his mouth open, seeing his Team Lead hanging. Now imagine the state of the people to climb next

Next was me, another idiot, when it came to taking any risks and luckily by now... another guy from the other group had landed to help and I some how escaped. In between all this was our Mr. Western Ghats alias Shashank, who kept moving ahead and telling.... 'Haan there is a path, we can go'.

In between all this at a juncture Rajendra and Stalin started, 'No Boss, we'll stay here and watch the sunrise from here and leave'. It was becoming treacherous, with all the thorns and people getting injured
The next one was fun.... we were all crawling holding dry grass and one grass root not holding on... would have marked the end of the people following behind. Then came a point, where we were supposed to lift ourselves and in between two rocks. It was getting tough friends and being awake the whole night wouldn't help the cause either. I was screaming, 'Naa yaar, this is not happening' and loosing hold of the grip in between the rocks, while Krish is trying to pull me up and suddenly a sahara, I felt myself lifted, to see Akshay from behind helping me up. Thanks to Ashay, this is the time when we remembered our friend Shawn and everyone at one voice, 'Good yaar, shawn missed..... it would have been very difficult'.
This was happening and then came a path, or rather we had reached a situation, where we started thinking .... the only way out is the WAY UP!!!.... yes, Up.... either up the mountain or up to the heavens, if we were going to be allowed inside. The path had a very narrow passage, where probably the slimmest could move easily, then the ray of hope, where we joined the actual path which we should have taken came along. Oh, this was a happier moment than seeing water in the midst of a desert.

By now, it was already 6am and the sun started rising and Akshay shooting it with his Handy cam and Krish with that camera and Raj, becoming the photographer he is. The best moments started a little later, when the clouds started moving from right to left. The best place for a shoot.
Then started the expedition back to Bangalore and coming down the hill.... we realized what a mistake it was to not take the guide and take a path that went straight up. If not for our enthusiasm to live and get back in one piece, we would not have reached the mountain top, or reached back to Bangalore.

Then the bike ride again and few bikes getting trapped for over speeding and if I was caught, would have had to pay more as all my documents were in Stalin's car which was already at Hebbal junction. Lucky escape. Both from the cops and the God of Death.

The ABC kick off trip, really got kicked off :)

Rahul Dravid - Greatest Team Man -1996-2012

Rahul Dravid.
Name of a man, who started at Lord's in 96. Very soon turned to be the backbone of Indian Middle Order. A Test batting line up without Rahul Dravid was unimaginable for our era of kids.

Returned home today, to open to a Facebook post of Rahul Dravid's retirement. Honestly i expected Rahul to be the last of the legends to leave amongst Sach, Lax and him. Just due to the mere greatness of the man at Test Cricket. Again the TEAM MAN in Rahul, has probably got the better of him.

A little bit of Nostalgia.

Rahul as we remember a lean man, who started amazingly in Tests at the Mecca of Cricket 'The Lord's'. Then the rise and the first century at in South Africa, where we struggled till then. Strong memories of the pulls of Brian McMillan still lives alive.

Then the struggle in One-Days, when Rahul would hit perfectly to the fielders. Then out of the team. His strong technique would bring him back into the team. The '99 World Cup of Cricket at England; would bring out the best in him.

Then the wicketkeeping under Sourav. He did well to support the team in 2003 World Cup. An Unsung Hero and Non complainer of Indian Cricket Lived on....

Then the captaincy stint under Greg 'The Mad' Chappel, probably the toughest challenge of Mr. Nice Guy. He did his best and the team line up of the World Cup 2007 was the reflection of the hard days of Indian Cricket. The tears in his eyes, just said 'Does he deserve this? For what has happened.'

A simple guy, that he is; he continued living the Test Cricket to its best. His Test Innings in England and West Indies was a reflection of it.

An Adieu by Rahul on 9th March 2012. A thought of grief across the nation, as we will not see the best No 3 in the World, in our line up.

Go on Rahul !!!! Enjoy Life. You will be loved by all Indians and even more by Bangloreans.

The Legend LIVES ON!!!!!
